Cheaha Mountain

Elevation: 2413 feet
Location: south of Oxford, Alabama
Date: September 19, 2015

Cheaha Mountain is the highest point in the state of Alabama with a summit elevation of 2413 feet. The summit is part of Cheaha State Park, which includes a couple of lodges, campgrounds, restaurant, trails, among other facilities and has a $4 per person entrance fee. A small observation tower on the summit is open to the public and provides 360 degree views. A 1520-foot boardwalk goes from a parking lot to Bald Rock, which is a rock at the edge of the mountain with views across the valley to the north.

The mountains and forest surrounding the state park are part of Talladega National Forest, which has a much more extensive hiking trail system. Alabama state highway 281 is a scenic route through the Talladega Mountains much like other scenic parkways. However, there was only one overlook along the 10-mile portion of the highway I drove.
